IN YOUR SPACE | September 2010

In Your Space have been involved in numerous educational projects and we continue to develop a broad range of educational projects throughout the North West. We aspire to create interactive, innovative, and transformative learning environments. We feel that there is an educational element to all our workshops whether they take place at school or within the community.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS THAT WE PROVIDE

We have been facilitating circus skills workshops based at the Waterside Theatre under the name North West Circus School since early 2004. These have provided a centrally based workshop where young people, many of whom have participated in workshops held in local community centres, can learn skills in a focused environment. Expectations of participants are high and they can be given higher quality attention than is possible in many community settings.

The North West Circus School is a cross community project which attracts male and female participants from across the city. We are delighted to announce that we secured funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in April 2006, this has giving us the opportunity to develop and work towards building an established Circus School in the North West. We currently run 2 x classes (10 weeks) a Term at the Waterside theatre, one is a beginner class and the other is an intermediate class which enables young people who have already developed circus skills to take these skills to a more advanced level. This funding has enabled us to meet the demand for circus skills in the North West area

These workshops have proved highly successful with a number of our participants already developing into skilled technicians in unicycle, stiltwalking, juggling, diabolo and street performance skills.

Our next North West Circus School programme will recommence in January 2007. For more information Call us, or email if you would like to put on our mailing list.

Circus Skills

A typical workshop session would normally last for 2 hours and would consist of 20 minutes of warm up games, 90 minutes of teaching circus skills, and a 10-minute break. During this time participants would learn from a range of skills including:

  • Diablo
  • Juggling
  • Stilt walking
  • Unicycle
  • Plate spinning
  • Object Balancing
  • Tight-rope

This is the basic structure of all circus workshops although as the week’s progress and the students become more confident time is allocated at the end of each session to allow students to focus on their favourite activity and the one where their skills has most developed.
